"Less Privacy is Good for Us (and You)"

Etzioni's article helps readers to see the complexity of privacy issues by explaining in greater detail issues that most people didn't even know were happening. Etzioni talks about how "biometrics" are coming into play; for example when Etzioni explains how "Wells Fargo is introducing a new device that allows a person to cash checks at ATM machines because the machines recognize faces."(132) This is going to be an invasion of privacy, although they are just trying to be careful so no ones money can be stolen. When it comes to invasion of someones phone call or reading anothers text messages on the computer is not right and this should not be allowed. Another privacy issue that is seen in the article is when a newborn baby is found to have HIV the mother can be tested to see if she is positive, in that case testing her is considered an invasion of her privacy. In the article Etzioni states "to save the lives of their children, they must be tested at delivery and treated even if this entails a violation of the mothers' privacy." (132) I completely agree with this idea because it is good to try and prevent more people from getting the HIV virus and if you have to violate the mothers' privacy a little it shouldn't be that big of a deal; in the end you are only letting someone have the chance of living a longer life. So all in all invading someones privacy is not always bad when it comes to saving someones life or keeping something from getting stolen, but when people take advantage of this is when privacy becomes an issue.
