A Quilt of a Country: Out of Many, One?

A Quilt of a Country: Out of Many, One? talks about how in America "All men are created equal", but as everyone knows, there are people out there that think they are better than others. America is a combination of many different cultures that are brought together as one nation. Some cultures don't get along which is not good for our country. Quindlen explains how when we were attacked by terrorists, our country came together to help each other out in a time of need, such as September eleventh. Now as time has passed people are going back to thinking they are better than others and racism is playing a big role.
This is a great topic to discuss because most people that live in America don't understand that the people who immigrate here work really hard to get here and they deserve an equal opportunity just like everyone else. It explains how most started by working in Ma-Pa stores and worked their way up and also that the immigrants today aren't too different from our parents. Everyone needs to work together and this country could come together to actually become one.

  1. what you said about some people thinking that they are better than others is very true. People of one race often think that they are superior to other races. Also many police men and women will target blacks and hispanics because of there race. Racial profiling is still a big problem in america even though America has many different races. Racial profiling is also a problem in the jail systems today. Racism has been reduced over the years because of the Civil Rights movement, but is still not obsolete. I belive that racism will always exist in America and there will never be a solution to the problem. Some people will never change there way of thinking and there will always be ignorant people.

  2. I agree that when an immigrant moves to this country that it is hard for them to get started and that they should be given the same opportunity to settle and make a living as our ancestors did. To become united is like a chain with one missing link the chain is broken, which means we need the support of everyone to fully be able to come together as one.

  3. Absolutely, Anna explains how the nation came together at a time of need and how at that time period all the photos of the people affected by 9/11 just meshed together. No one was better that anyone but as a nation we were all one spirit. I also like how you bring in the fact that most immigrants work hard to get here. One thing we fail to realize is that immigrant do not want to be here they just have to. They do not want to leave there families at home but they have to because they have to work. So why not give them a chance equally to show their talents and help there families ?
